Mission
To conduct independent, community-rooted AI research free from Big Tech's pervasive influence. DAIR is premised on the belief that the harms of AI are preventable, and that when its production and deployment include diverse perspectives and deliberate process, AI can be put to work for people rather than against them.
Milestones
2023: Researchers Alex Hanna and Dylan Baker joined DAIR from Google's Ethical AI team
2021: Launched on December 2 by Timnit Gebru with $3.7M in initial funding from the Ford, MacArthur, Kapor, Open Society, and Rockefeller foundations
